I broke my promise to myself and stripped wallpaper again. The only reason I did this is for $100,000 profit. My family and I did not have time to wait for professional help. We sold our investment property before finishing the work and needed the home ready for appraisal.

While stripping the wallpaper, I realized that many homemakers get wrong advice for this horrendous task। After years of experience on over 30 houses, I offer my tried and best tips:

1. Use a clothes steamer or rent a professional steamer
2. Soak a large section of the wall
3. Run a "Paper Tiger" scoring tool across the damp section
4. Steam the section again
5. Spray the section with fabric softener and hot water
6. Score the section with the paper tiger again
7. Steam again
8. Remove any curling edges (sometimes large areas peel off)
9. Scrape with a six inch sheetrock blade
10. Repeat the above steps on the section until most scrapes off easily
11. Scrub with hot water, TSP, and a sponge with a scratchy surface

Cautions: Use the Paper Tiger gingerly so you don't scratch or gouge the walls. Use gloves with the harsh chemical TSP.

Don't live with ugly wallpaper any longer!

Cloth has one more important quality that it can be "painted" for expressing detailed decorative patterns, that can greatly add to the beauty of the space.

It is also possible to do "embroidery" on cloth, if painting is not a good choice or budget doesn't allow. Depending upon the weave of the cloth strands the thickness, transparency, etc. can be easily achieved. This makes the cloth most suitable for various kinds of uses such as linen, curtains, bed sheets, etc...

3) Rubber/Leather....

Rubber is used in the form of PVC flooring, is easily available and most importantly is wash proof and durable. It can be printed upon using design patterns of any style, rich with colors. Comes in the form of large sheets or even individual tiles.

Unlike tiled flooring the PVC flooring is much less affected by atmospheric changes. Other types of tiled floorings or even wooden flooring can have a direct effect on the surface because of the expansion and contraction of the flooring material. 4) Plastic....

There are infinite uses of this great material. The only disadvantage environmentalist have pointed out that it is not bio-degradable.

Because of its artificial nature it can be "manufactured" in various. colors, shapes, sizes, strength. The biggest advantage of plastic is it is waterproof and electrical shockproof. That's why mainly used for electrical accessories. It is lightweight as compared to other material types. Entire furniture pieces such as chairs, tables can be easily molded out as a seamless model in plastic.

5) Steel/Iron....

Steel is mostly used in interior design where the main purpose is to give support and carry weight to the floor. That's why main use of steel is done to create the structural frame that carries the weight of the people who are going to use the furniture piece.

I spent what seemed like forever looking for something that wasn’t too big for my small apartment. I ended up making my own using parts from a hardware store and an enormous Danish furniture store. The only thing "typical" about this house is the fact that it has the basic rooms you'd find in all homes. You'll see and feel the difference before you even enter the house. From the entry patio it's clear that this is really two houses connected by an entry hall, each with its own profile and roofline.

The entry hall provides access to either the living portion of the house on your right, or to the main sleeping quarters on your left. Or you can walk straight ahead past the coat closet through the double glass doors to the garden patio beyond. The kitchen, dining area, and living room are really one long, open space with a 12'6" ceiling. The kitchen features a large walk–in pantry, and it is separated from the dining area by a breakfast bar. The wall between the living room and bedroom 2 has a gas fireplace, a long A/V cabinet, and an IT cabinet. Double French doors bring you to a large covered patio that includes a built–in grill.

Also on this side of the house is a bedroom with a full bath, a mechanical room off the pantry, and a mudroom near the garage door. Next to the mudroom is a built–in bench, and next to it the original homeowners installed a large aquarium!

On the other side of the entry hall, there's a master suite, a laundry, and a third bedroom that could be used as a study or a home office. The master bedroom has room for a sitting area on one end, and access to a very large walk–in closet and dressing area. The master bath has two sinks, a vanity, and a large shower. The laundry room next to it can be entered from the dressing room as well as the hall. A stone veneer wall that wraps around the master bedroom suite shortens into a low wall, delineating the rear garden patio space.

The exterior walls of the house are designed to be clad primarily with horizontal wood siding, along with stone veneer, pre–finished metal fascia, and lots of aluminum–clad wooden windows. The flat roofs have deep overhangs that provide shade around the perimeter, and protection as you walk to and from the detached garage.

Foundation Info

This house was originally designed to have a slab foundation. You can of course change it to a full or partial basement, or to a crawlspace, but you will need the help of a local builder or designer, and the new foundation plans should be reviewed by a structural engineer prior to construction.

Introduction

Designed by the internationally renowned architect David Adjaye, 'Lost House' is one of the most significant domestic projects of recent times.

It stands in the heart of King's Cross, offering easy access to the railway station and new Eurostar terminal. 'Lost House' occupies the site of a former delivery yard adjacent to the Alaska Building. Its modest presence on the street gives little clue as to the spectacular interior within.

The interior has been designed with impeccable attention to detail. This is an inward-looking house that offers great privacy. The scarcity of external windows is compensated for not only by the use of light-wells, but also by the clever configuration of spaces and use of reflective surface materials, inlcuding a particularly luxurious black resin floor in the reception room. The reception is used by the current owners as a dramatic backdrop for catwalk fashion shows.

King's Cross is currently the subject of enormous investment and extensive redevelopment. Adjacent to 'Lost House' is the studio of architect John Pawson, and state-of-the-art new offices for The Guardian newspaper are situated at the end of the road. Commode’ is a French word meaning ‘easy’ or ‘convenient’, which perhaps explains why the generally accepted modern sense of the word is that of a discreet piece of furniture to be found in a sick room concealing a chamber pot. Commode is also French for chest-of-drawers. Highly decorative, and more to be appreciated for its aesthetic qualities than for its utility, this article of furniture became extremely fashionable in England during the latter half of the eighteenth century. It retained its French name in order to set it apart from the mundane native chest of drawers familiar here since the seventeenth century.

One of a pair of superb Italian neoclassical commodes made in Milan by Giuseppe Maggiolini, the greatest Italian cabinetmaker and marqueteur of the period. They were made as coronation gifts from the Italian people to Napoleon in 1804.They are illustrated in several books on Italian furniture.
